MAIN CAMPUS GIS PROJECT Facility Planning Case Study The Challenge: The Facilities and Maintenance Department on the main campus in Winona, MN needed to improve the effectiveness and clarity of their facilities management system. New information was not accessible among the personnel and the lack of an organized system was preventing the department from running at an optimal level. Much of the campus facilities information was stored and managed on paper, or in some cases not documented at all. The Solution: GeoSpatial Services worked with the Saint Mary's University Facilities and Maintenance Department to develop a fully functional internet-based mapping system. The IMS system is allowing university facilities/maintenance employees to access GIS layers that were automated into digital format from hard copy maps. The process is improving efficiency with an easy to use system for university employees, who are now able to view imagery, buildings, vegetation, utilities, and electric layers to name a few. In conjunction with Department of Resource Analysis staff, Environmnetal & GeoSpatial Services is building the functionality to allow for endless viewing and querying capabilities that will soon be made available for the public to use to locate campus information. Our employees will deliver an internet accessible IMS that was built using ESRI's ArcIMS™ infrastructure to provide Saint Mary's University of Minnesota with an informative tool to evaluate and provide functional ways to manage facility structures.
