UMR Recreation Boating Survey AND WEBSITE

The Federal and State resource management agencies have conducted recreation boating surveys on the Mississippi and St. Croix river systems since the early 1980's. GSS began conducting these surveys for the agencies in 1997. The survey initially consisted of collecting large format (21/4 by 21/4 inch) color photography of the River's main channel for 12 times during the boating season. The objective is to capture a qaulitative assessment of the number and type of boats using the river during peak and non peak (holiday and off holiday) periods.
This information is analyzed and compared to subsequent biannual surveys to determine use distribution and boating trends over time. Over the past 5 years the geographic extent of coverage has shrunk in response to decreasing Federal and State budgets. The summer of 2007 looks like the first year since 1997 where a complete system survey will be completed. In addition, over the past four years GSS has integrated digital photography and GPS data to reduce project cost and increase value added project products.

During 2005 GSS developed and launched the UMR Recreation Boating Survey Website, creating a site where survey data and a new web mapping system can be accessed by the public and river managers. Through the site's home page users can access the partners websites, the new River mapping and data query sites, and the historic recreation survey reports.
