SAVANNAH RIVER FIELD INVESTIGATIONS
Montgomery Watson under contract with the Corps of Engineers, Department of the Army, subcontacted with GeoSpatial Services to provide equipment (boats) and HAZMAT certified staff to conduct fisheries and vegetation analysis in support of their environmental remediation efforts on the Savanna, Illinois Army Depot’s munitions burning grounds. GeoSpatial Services plant taxonomist and fisheries biologist completed fish collections, sediment sampling, and vegetation sampling. Samples were collected and provided to Montgomery Watson for detail analysis to assess the risk posed to both aquatic and terrestrial species by heavy metal and explosives contamination found at the site. GSS was also created the map of plant communities and their distributions at the study site and identified threatened or endangered plants. This project received the 2004 Corps of Engineer’s Merit Award under their Design and Environmental Awards Program.
